Ladies' changing room, Grasshopper Club, Zürich/ZH

With the Grasshopper Club Zurich's decision to welcome women to the rowing section, the historic boathouse on Mythenquai has been extended almost unnoticeably, but with a clear gesture.

A new changing room has been created on the upper floor - currently small in size, but big in its statement. It not only makes space for the new members, but also exemplifies our careful handling of the historical building fabric, on the one hand, and our forward planning on the other. The intervention was designed in such a way that it can be extended as the number of members grows.

The defining feature was the installation of the shower cubicle. Its implementation in the historic timber construction, placed high demands on sealing and moisture protection. The position of the shower was chosen with a view to a later extension - a sign of the club's foresight. Despite the provisional nature of the room, the intervention is intended to be a welcome gesture. The new members should feel valued and integrated right from the start.

Materiality and lighting contribute to the atmosphere: the tiles in the shower area echo the colour of the existing wooden floor and create a sense of warmth and unity. Backlit cathedral glass creates a surprising sense of spaciousness in the shower and corridor, despite the narrow spatial context.
